Semester Two 2010-2011
HC Boys' Curling Team, 2011 - On Friday, March 3rd, the HC Boys’ Curling Team competed in the EOSSAA Tournament held at the Brockville Curling Club. In the final, they defeated Almonte 9-1 to advance to the OFSSA Championships in Thunder Bay. Team members David Brown (skip), Nick Zelizniak (vice), Caleb Gray (second), and Ross Fabbro (lead) became the first team in Holy Cross history to qualify for the OFSSAA Curling Finals. Boys' Hockey Championship, February 28th, 2011 - On Monday, February 28th, the Holy Cross Boys’ Hockey Team defeated Napanee 3-0 at the Invista Center to win their 2nd KASSAA Championship in 3 years. The Crusaders then travelled to Pembroke for the EOSSAA Championships on Thursday, March 3rd and again pounded Napanee 6-0 in EOSSAA Championship Game to qualify for OFSSAA.
HC at the Kingston Improv Finals, Saturday, February 26th, 2011 - The 2011 Holy Cross Improv team was comprised of Ciara Roberts, Allison McLean, Michael Vermeersch, Hailey Masterson, Tyler Check, Grace Hill, Laura Donohue, and Rowan Burke-Lacourseriere. These eight students were devoted to improv for the previous three months, rehearsing for the Kingston Regional Improv Games which took place over the week of February 25th, 2011. Fifteen schools from across the region took part in this week long tournament. The top five teams competed in a final round, which was held Saturday, February 26th, 2011 at McArthur College Auditorium. Holy Cross emerged on top and qualified for the Canadian Tournament at the National Arts Center, April 19th-23rd, 2011.

See the Senior Boys' Basketball Team in their march to the KASSAA and EOSSAA Championships. On Sunday, March 20th, 2011, the Crusaders won a very hard-fought 42-41 decision over the previously undefefeated Frontenac Falcons in the Senior Boys' Basketball KASSAA Finals at Queen's. The team followed that up by winning the EOSSAA Championship Tournament hosted by Holy Cross. The Crusaders avenged a round-robin loss to St. Joseph's from Cornwall by defeating the Panthers 49-40 in the Senior Boys' Basketball EOSSAA Finals on February 25th, 2011.
Semester One 2010-2011
Holy Cross Cheerleading KASSAA Championship, February 6th, 2011 - On Sunday, February 6th, 2011 the Holy Cross Cheerleading Team competed in the KASSAA championship. The team of 36 talented athletes captured the KASSAA title once again. The team also competed in a regional competitionand won the Senior School Intermediate division. By having the highest score of all school teams in the competition, the Crusaders also won the Overall Grand Championship title for the third year in a row.
Bridges Superhero Olympics, January 21st, 2011 - On January 21st, 2011, Mrs. Dixon’s leadership class with the help of her Grade Twelve gym class put on the first annual Superhero Olympics for the Bridges Program in the Holy Cross gymnasium. The day consisted of fun activities such as a soccer shoot out, bean bag toss, scooter board challenges, octopus and much more! Highlights of the day included an opening ceremony which included the lighting of the Olympic Torch.
Grade Eleven Vocals Class Final Concert, Wednesday, January 12th, 2011 - Ms. Check-Drum and her Grade Eleven Vocal class performed "Songs of a Winter Night" with the company of the Holy Cross Pit Band. The show opened with a solo made my Danielle Gervais, singing Song for a Winter Night, written by Gordon Lightfoot. The concert featured a variety of different styles, ranging from Don’t Stop Believing, by Journey, sung by Ashley Ferreira-Bennett, to Perfect, by Hedley, sung by Tyler Check. Ms. Check-Drum called up her previous vocals students to accompany her class in singing Baba Yetu, or the Lord’s Prayer in Swahili. The night ended with the crowd favorite, Seasons of Love, from the musical Rent. ![]()
Christmas Season Highlights - The Christmas Season is a busy time at Holy Cross. See highlights of some of the activities including the Lighting the Advent Candle, a lunchtime band concert presented by the Holy Cross Junior Band and the Christmas Season Mass.

The 22nd Memorial Basketball Games between the Holy Cross Crusaders and Regi Panthers Boys' Basketball Teams took place on Wednesday, December 15th, 2010 at Holy Cross. The Junior Crusaders were on the wrong end of a 49 - 29 score while the Senior Crusaders dominated the Panthers 54 - 25. More importantly, over $10 000 was raised in support of cancer research. Over its first 22 years, over $285,000 has been raised for the cancer research. Mr. John Esford and some of the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students along with SHSM community partner TV COGECO recorded both games. These broadcasts feature multiple cameras, live play-by-play and half-time shows. See the half-time show from the Junior Game and the the half-time show from the Senior Game.
Junior Boys Basketball, December 7th, 2010 - See the highlights of the Holy Cross Crusaders Junior Boys' Basketball Team versus the L.C.V.I. Lancers in the season opener played at Holy Cross. The Crusaders prevailed in a hard-fought 59-55 overtime victory with tough defence and some clutch shooting.

The Holy Cross Arts Department presented the musical Pippin from November 24th until November 27th, 2010 to popular and critical acclaim. Pippin is part medieval morality play, part modern satire – is pure musical theatre razzle-dazzle. Showcasing the work of over one hundred performing, visual, musical, and technical production student artists, Pippin was an example of challenging, thought-provoking and entertaining theatricality. Junior Girls Basketball Team vs Bayridge, November 9th, 2010 - See the highlights of the Junior Girls' Basketball Team against the Bayridge Blazers . This quarter-final game was played at Holy Cross as the Crusaders went on to win 57 - 13. The girls next won their semi-final 52 - 37 against Sydenham to move onto the KASSAA Final. The girls played very hard but came up on the wrong end of a 42 - 30 decision to the undefeated Frontenac Falcons.
Senior Boys Football Final vs. Sydenham - November 13th, 2010 - The Senior Boys Football Team fell just short of an undefeated season and their second consecutive KASSAA Football Championship with a heart-breaking 15-14 loss to the Sydenham Golden Eagles.
Remembrance Day Ceremony, November 11th, 2011 - The ceremony began with a prayer from Father Labelle and then continued with a dramatic reflection of Remembrance Day presented by the students from Ms. Melo-Jordan’s Grade 10 Drama Class. The dancers performed to the music directed by Mr. Orser and his music students. The ceremony came to an end with the song “Fields of Gold” sung by Ms. Check-Drumm’s Grade Eleven Vocal Class. Mr. Esford’s Communication Technology Class created a PowerPoint presentation displaying pictures of our soldiers past and present.
Junior Boys Volleyball, October 28th, 2010 - See the highlights of the Junior Boys' Volleyball Team versus the eventual KASSAA champions Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers. This game was played at Holy Cross as part of the Paul Halligan Classic.
Field Hockey Team vs. Bayridge, October 13th, 2010 - See the highlights of the Holy Cross Field Hockey Team's 6 - 1 romp over the Bayridge Blazers on Wednesday, October th, 2010. Friday Night Lights, October 8th, 2010 - A large number of Holy Cross students as well as many other Holy Cross fans traveled downtown to Tindall Field at Queens University where our Junior and Senior Football teams went face to face with the Regiopolis Panthers. This great rivalry resulted in the fans from both schools forming a sea of green, silver, garnet and gold and filled the sidelines with intense school spirit. Thankfully mother nature co-operated and there was no rainfall on this year's Friday Night Lights. With a comfortable temperature and a crowd estimated more then 2000 people, it was a perfect night for an exciting doubleheader between the Panthers and the Crusaders. Our Senior Crusaders stepped up and defeated the Panthers 22-8 in an exhilarating, quick-paced game. Movie shot and edited by Mr. John Esford.
Pep Rally, October 8th, 2010 - On October 8th, 2010, the school was filled with passionate students dressed in the craziest green and silver outfits flaunting their school spirit. To finish off the outstanding Spirit Day students as well as school faculty joined together for our annual Pep Rally. Everyone displayed their true Crusader spirit by getting loud and supporting our reputable sports teams at this event. Adding to the fun were entertaining videos and cheers performed by members of a number of teams. These included hilarious introduction videos created by this years school council, a Harry Potter spoof by the girls field hockey team and a comical Jersey Shore video from the Senior boys football team. Football Games vs. LaSalle, September 29th, 2010 - Both the Junior and Senior Football Teams scored 28 - 0 victories against LaSalle on an extremely soggy field on September 29th, 2010. The constant downpour did not stop the explosive running attacks and stifling defences of both squads. Movie shot and edited by Mr. John Esford.
Grade 9 Orientation, September, 2010 - Holy Cross Grade 9 students took part in a half-day orientation on Friday, September 10th, 2010. Regular Grade 9 classes in Periods One and Two were replaced by activities designed to help students get to know one another and feel welcome here at Holy Cross. They began their transformation to Crusaders with the application of liberal amounts of green (washable) paint and the first of many school chants. The students then proceeded to Woodbine Field where they took part in activities such as "Water Balloon Toss", "Slip and Slide" and a series of unique races. At the end of the morning, they returned to the school for a hot-dog lunch and a bit of a clean-up. Graduation Ceremony, June 2010 - On Tuesday, June 29th 2010, the Holy Cross Community gathered to celebrate the Graduation of the Holy Cross Class of 2010. On this evening, our graduating students received their Ontario Secondary School Diploma in front of proud family, friends and teachers.
Mr. Roberts "Song for the Graduates", June 2010 - As part of his duties as the MC for the graduation ceremony, Mr. Sean Roberts composed and sang a song based on Shakira's World Cup theme song. A lively addition to the festivities!
Grade 12 Year-End Vocal Concert, June 2010 - The Holy Cross Cafetorium was transformed on the evening of Wednesday, June 9 into a night of relentless entertainment. The Grade 12 Vocal Class performed their final concert entitled "Do You Remember...?", a night filled with song, dance and fun times. They even performed a medley of songs from the 80s, complete with colourful outfits inspired by the era. The students would like to extend their gratitude to the unstoppable band which included Cam Gravelle, Tyler Check, Wayne Roberts and Mr. Sicoli.
Genesis Awards Show, June 2010 - Holy Cross presented its annual Genesis Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 26, 2010. the evening celebrated the achievement of students in Drama, Guitar, Music, Visual Art, Vocal Music, Audio and Video Production, and Graphic Design and Photography. Awards were presented to every grade level in all disciplines as were special awards of recognition. The evening featured stage and screen performances of highlights from the artistic year, as well as a two day exhibition of the vibrant work of our visual artists.
Holy Cross Junior Soccer Team Wins KASSAA Championship, May 2010 - A combination of shutout goaltending by Adam Gencarelli, tough defense, controlling mid-field play and timely goal scoring led the Junior Boys' Crusaders to a 3-0 victory over a tough Sydenham Golden Eagle team in the KASSAA Soccer Championship on Thursday, May 20th. After a slow start, the team turned the season around by winning the Steve Mantle Tournament on May 5th and continued their winning ways throughout the playoffs. The successful season was truly a team effort as every player made a meaningful contribution at key times throughout the year.

Eco-Fashion Show, March 2010 - The students of Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School put their imaginations to the test for a charity event no one will forget. The K to K Charity Eco-Wardrobe Show was held on March 9th, 2010 in the Holy Cross cafeteria. All proceeds from this event supported K to K, an organization of teachers and students from Holy Cross who travel from Kingston, Ontario to Kingston, Jamaica, and volunteer in an economically disadvantaged community. K to K was an opportunity for the Holy Cross community to see the wearable art that students designed for each runway. The motto for the show was "re-use the old to make new".
Semester One 2009-2010
Grade 11 Year-End Vocal Concert, January 2010 - The Grade 11 Vocal Music Class presented Rhythm of a Brand New Day which took place on Wednesday January 13th 2010. The class had been preparing for this event throughout the semester and their hard work and dedication truly paid off. The choral ensemble had beautiful dynamics and a great blend. As soloists, these students really rose to the challenge and sang beautifully. Highlights of the evening included “Baba Yetu” (a Swahili adaptation of The Lord's Prayer), “Lollipop”, and “Under Pressure”. The vocal students wrapped up the evening with a lively, fun-filled rendition of “You Can't Stop the Beat”!
Rick Thompson Memorial Coffee House, December 2009 - The Rick Thompson Memorial Coffee House, held on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009, was a huge artistic and fund-raising success. The many acts of the night brought the house down with their talent, including performances from Omar the rapper, local comedian Calvin, singer extrordinare Josh Blackstock with his piano player Laura Donohue and the fabulous Tianna Weatherdon doing a dance piece. All of the bands were excellent and were not afraid to show what they’ve got, getting the crowd on their feet and bringing the cafetorium to life with rock and roll. More importantly, over $1000 was raised to be donated to St. Mary of the Lake Palliative Care Centre in Rick's name.
Junior and Senior Football Championships, November 2009 - Both the Junior and Senior Crusaders won the Kingston Area Secondary School Athletic Association (KASSAA) Football Championship with victories on Sunday, November 8th. Championships are not new to the Juniors as they captured their fourth title in the past five years. The Seniors however won for the first time in the 23 year history of the Holy Cross.
Honour Roll Breakfast, November 2009 - On Wednesday, November 5th, students on the 2009 Academic Honour Roll were invited to the annual Honour Roll Breakfast to celebrate their academic achievements. These students achieved an average of 80 or above in their courses in the 2008-2009 school year. While enjoying breakfast, the students heard congratulatory words from Mr. Walsh and other dignitaries. After the students receiving their certificates of achievement, keynote speaker Andrew McIntyre, a 2002 graduate, gave an inspiring talk.
Paul Halligan Classic, Junior Girls' Basketball Team "Reflections", November 2009 - Paul Halligan was a graduate of RND, a basketball and football coach and the driving force behind the Peter Carty Memorial. Above all else, Paul was a devoted member of the school community, continually demonstrating his Christian call to service. He lived a vocation of service and our school communities are blessed to have known him and touched by his life. Paul died of cancer after a two year battle with the disease in 1997. Every year, the HC and Regi participate in a number of activities to raise awareness about breast cancer and raise funds for the Breast Screening Program in Kingston. In this video, the members of the HC Junior team reflect about the event as well as the on-going battle against cancer.

350 Time Lapse - Holy Cross gained Silver Status last year (2008-2009) as an Eco-school. To start off the 2009-2010 school year, the Green Team decided to register and join the 350 Movement to raise awareness and promote 350 activities throughout the school community. On Thursday, October 15th, the entire school population gathered on the football field for the "HC 350" photo. Grade 9 Exploring Technologies (TIG 1O) Movie, September 2009 - This video shows the exciting new technological studies course called "Exploring Technologies". It gives an overview of the areas covered in the course and some of the interesting projects produced by the students.
Triumph of the Cross Liturgy, September 2009 - The entire Holy Cross Community came together on September 10, 2009 in the gymnasium for the first liturgy of the school year on Thursday, September 10th. We celebrated our school feast, the Triumph of the Cross. The Student Council and our CICS Executive were commissioned for the coming year and crosses for our Grade 9 students were blessed.
