Grade 11 Communications Technology:
Broadcast and Print Production - TGJ 3O

This course enables students to develop knowledge and skills in the areas of graphic communication, printing and publishing, audio and video production, and broadcast journalism. Students will work both independently and as part of a production team to design and produce media products in a project-driven environment. Practical projects may include the making of signs, yearbooks, video and /or audio productions, newscasts, and documentaries. Students will also develop an awareness of related environmental and societal issues, and will explore secondary and post-secondary education and training pathways and career opportunities in the various communication technology fields.

PROMO U

PROMO U is designed to assist the advancement needs of graduating students. Artists and Athletes will create promotional material for application to college, university, or work. Students will produce their own personal promotional video, DVD case cover, and web site.

Unit 1: Digital Video Production (Promotional Video)

Description: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the core concepts, techniques, and skills required to produce a range of audio, video, broadcast journalism, graphic arts, and printing and publishing products or services. Students will demonstrate an understanding of technical terminology, scientific concepts, and mathematical concepts used in audio and video production, broadcast journalism, graphic arts, and printing and publishing, and apply them to the creation of media products. Students will demonstrate an understanding of and apply the interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively in a team setting. Students will edit a sports highlights or arts performance video. Students will learn how to format media presentations for a variety of exhibition applications; DVD, internet, etc…

Unit 2: Photography (Photo Journalism and Portrait Photography)

Description: Students will apply project management techniques to the planning and development of audio, video, broadcast journalism, graphic arts, and printing products. They will apply a design process or other problem-solving processes or strategies to meet a range of challenges in creating audio, video, broadcast journalism, graphic arts, and printing products. Students will create products that demonstrate competence in the application of creative and technical skills. Students will photograph arts and sports events to share in a media resources pool of fellow artists and athletes for use in video, DVD case covers and web sites. Students will also photograph formal promotional portrait “head shots” for use in videos, DVD case covers and web sites.

Unit 3: Graphic Design and Desktop Publishing (DVD Case Cover)

Description: Students will describe the impact of communications media technologies and activities on the environment, and identify ways of reducing their harmful effects. They will demonstrate an understanding of social effects and issues arising from the use of communication media technologies and the importance or respecting cultural and societal diversity in the production of media projects. Students will design and produce a DVD case cover to compliment their promotional video production. This graphic design will support the student “Branding” in their application process.

Unit 4: Web Site Design (Promotional Web Site)

This is a promotional web site for a student artist to exibit their art work.

Description: Students will demonstrate an understanding of and apply safe work practices in the use of audio, video, broadcast journalism, graphic arts, and printing equipment. They will identify careers in audio and video production, broadcast journalism, graphic arts, and printing and publishing, and describe the skills, work habits, education, and training required for entry into employment in these fields. Students will create a personal promotional web site which will display their contract information, personal statistics, resume, promotional videos, photos, etc…
